About the role

Blockchain engineering internship/co-op with Scotiabank’s Velocity Program in Toronto, running January–April 2027. You’ll develop and test digital-asset and payment technology, including smart contracts and blockchain integrations, while collaborating across technical and banking functions. The role includes training, coaching, student events, and a structured application assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and improve software supporting digital assets, tokenisation, and programmable payments.
  • Assist with smart contract development and testing for issuance, transfers, redemption, validation, and exception handling.
  • Integrate blockchain components with APIs, microservices, payment systems, ledgers, databases, and enterprise platforms.
  • Contribute to proofs of concept, prototypes, pilots, and minimum viable products with senior team guidance.
  • Analyse transaction flows, investigate technical issues, write unit tests, participate in reviews, and document implementation evidence.
  • Collaborate across engineering, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, product, risk, compliance, and operations teams.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a diploma or degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, mathematics, data science, or related fields.
  • Foundational programming experience in one or more languages, including Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go, C#, C++, Rust, or Solidity.
  • Understanding of data structures, APIs, databases, testing, version control, and debugging.
  • Interest in blockchain, distributed systems, digital assets, payments, financial technology, or cryptography.
  • Ability to investigate unfamiliar problems, consider alternatives, and communicate reasoning clearly.
  • Willingness to learn, collaborate across disciplines, receive feedback, and contribute positively to an inclusive team.

Helpful Experience

  • Coursework or projects involving blockchain, distributed systems, smart contracts, or event-driven applications.
  • Exposure to Ethereum, EVM-compatible or permissioned blockchains, token standards, wallets, or digital signatures.
  • Experience with REST APIs, microservices, messaging platforms, cloud services, or containers.
  • Familiarity with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, or open-source development.
  • Interest in payment processing, settlement, reconciliation, banking systems, or financial market infrastructure.
  • Experience explaining technical projects or trade-offs to non-technical audiences.
