Internship

Location

New York City, NY

Duration

12 weeks

About the role

This 12-week New York internship offers practical experience in financial engineering within LSEG’s Optimisation Strats Team. Interns work with experienced engineers to develop algorithms, optimisation models, data-processing logic, validation checks, and transaction proposals that improve derivatives portfolio services and products.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement improvements to optimisation services with a team of four to six financial engineers.
  • Develop algorithms for linear, mixed-integer, and convex optimisation problems supporting derivatives portfolio improvements.
  • Build data-preprocessing logic, post-processing validation checks, and proposal-generation functionality for large datasets.
  • Collaborate with Product Development to enhance products using client feedback, run analysis, and strategic projects.

Example Projects

  • Develop scaling schemes to improve optimisation reliability and performance.
  • Introduce mixed-integer models to achieve rounded solutions.
  • Analyse solution sensitivity to data changes and identify constraints to relax for maximum impact.
  • Refactor code to share functionality and business logic across assets.
  • Improve runtime performance using heuristics to reduce datasets and solution search spaces.
  • Develop functionality to validate incoming client data before optimisation.

Requirements

  • Penultimate-year undergraduate or final-year undergraduate student planning to continue onto a master’s degree in 2027/28.
  • Studying mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, or another quantitative field.
  • Experience with Python; familiarity with pandas and NumPy is advantageous.
  • Strong mathematical background in numerical methods, linear algebra, probability, and statistics.
  • Basic understanding of linear or mixed-integer programming and convex optimisation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; financial products knowledge and UNIX familiarity are advantageous.

Recruitment Process

  • Submit an application and resume; candidates should submit only one internship application.
  • Complete technical and coding assessments evaluating coding ability, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Complete an untimed immersive online assessment about working at LSEG.
  • Attend a strength-based video interview followed by a virtual half-day assessment centre.
  • Assessment centres are conducted virtually, with further exercise information provided upon invitation.
