Database Engineer Intern - Summer 2027

About the role

The Database Engineer Intern will support database health, performance, reliability, maintenance, troubleshooting, automation, documentation, and recovery efforts. Working with data and technology teams in Chicago, the intern will monitor environments, write SQL, assist with migrations, and collaborate with engineers and analysts throughout Summer 2027.

Responsibilities

• Monitor database health, performance, availability, and operational incidents.
• Assist with backups, restores, patching, migrations, replication, and disaster recovery testing.
• Create and maintain database documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.
• Manage user access, permissions, and basic database security configurations.
• Write and optimize SQL queries for data retrieval, reporting, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
• Collaborate with engineers and analysts while automating repetitive operational tasks.

Requirements

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Information Systems, or a related field.
• Expected to graduate by Summer 2029.
• Understand relational database concepts, including tables, indexes, keys, and normalization.
• Familiarity with SQL, database queries, and at least one database platform.
• Basic Linux or Windows knowledge, Python coding experience, and exposure to Bash or PowerShell.
• Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, communication, learning, and fast-paced collaboration skills.

Work Arrangement

• Work onsite at the Chicago office five days per week.
