About the role

Chicago-based Summer 2027 internship for an AI engineer embedded on the DevOps team. The role focuses on internal, production-adjacent tooling, including generative alert-response assistants, retrieval-augmented generation over permissioned data, and scoped agentic remediation. The intern will collaborate with technology teams while applying strong governance, auditing, security, and human-approval controls.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype agent workflows using tools, policy boundaries, and human-in-the-loop controls.
  • Collaborate with platform and service teams to expose observability and operational context safely to agents.
  • Document experiments, limitations, evaluation methods, and safety assumptions.
  • Ship changes through Git using branches, merge requests, and meaningful commits.

Core Projects

  • Prototype a generative alert-response agent using Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Tempo, Alertmanager, and OpenTelemetry sources.
  • Build RAG over permissioned runbooks, tickets, documentation, system designs, network designs, and postmortems.
  • Improve internal knowledge-corpus coverage, metadata, ownership, freshness, grounding, and citation quality.
  • Design and implement scoped remediation capabilities with explicit guardrails and human approval.
  • Explore natural-language questions over additional permissioned firm data for engineers.
  • Apply permissioning, auditing, logging, and cost controls throughout all project phases.

Must-Have Requirements

  • Pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Expected to graduate by Summer 2028.
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools, preferably building agents with tools or orchestration beyond prompt-only chat.
  • Experience with RAG, including retrieval design, chunking, evaluation, grounding, or production-minded prototyping.
  • Python proficiency for prototyping and integration; ability to consume and create APIs and work with JSON.
  • Git workflow experience and sound judgment when handling sensitive data, secrets, prompts, logs, and internal policies.

Preferred Skills

  • Linux fundamentals, including shell, processes, logs, permissions, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Networking fundamentals covering DNS, TCP, HTTP/S, ports, and load balancing versus Ingress.
  • Kubernetes fundamentals, including debugging, pods, services, and Ingress.
  • Coursework or projects involving Kubernetes, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, CI/CD, Terraform, Ansible, or cloud platforms.
