About the role

Join BMO Capital Markets’ 14-week Summer 2027 internship on Calgary’s Energy Sales and Trading desk. You will analyze Canadian and global crude oil and gas fundamentals, support market-making activity, develop data and modelling solutions, and contribute to client materials and trade ideas alongside energy professionals serving institutional, corporate, and government clients.

Program and Desk

  • Work on one Global Markets desk during a 14-week internship.
  • Join Calgary’s commodity derivatives desk alongside energy professionals in a fast-paced, competitive environment.
  • Serve Canadian and US clients across upstream, midstream, downstream, and end-use energy markets.
  • Support transactions involving crude oil, natural gas, refined products, swaps, options, inventory finance, and storage.
  • Participate in teach-ins, trading games, senior-leader meetings, and networking events throughout the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze global and Canadian crude oil and gas market fundamentals for sales and trading decisions.
  • Review and organize existing models, then build Canadian crude data feeds using subscriptions and web scraping.
  • Improve infrastructure and complete ad hoc projects supporting sales and trading activities.
  • Develop pricing and risk models, market-data displays, spreadsheets, and quantitative trading insights.
  • Maintain and distribute marketing infrastructure, pitch books, and market analysis.
  • Prepare client presentations, develop trade ideas, support client events, and organize market data and events.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or non-MBA master’s program, graduating in December 2027 or spring 2028.
  • Strong academic record and extracurricular achievement.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of financial and/or energy markets.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills in demanding team environments.
  • Proactive, resilient, motivated, organized, detail-oriented, self-directed, and committed to strong professional integrity.

Preferred Technical Qualifications

  • Degree studies in finance, engineering, actuarial science, computer science, mathematics, physics, or statistics.
  • Knowledge of front-end technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or Angular.
  • Knowledge of back-end languages including C++, C#, Java, Python, or VBA.
  • Experience with R, MATLAB, SQL, Oracle, data manipulation, statistical methods, or mathematical models.
  • Fluency in Excel, including scripting and efficient spreadsheet design.
  • Strong technical writing ability.
