About the role

This 3–6-month London internship places you within a Barclays quantitative team, contributing to algorithmic trading strategies, model research, valuation and risk analytics, and data tools. You may join Markets Quantitative Analytics, Risk Quantitative Analytics, or Electronic Trading, collaborating with trading, technology, risk, finance, and other stakeholders.

Programme and teams

  • Work for 3–6 months within one quantitative business area through a longer off-cycle internship.
  • Markets Quantitative Analytics develops models, data science, and insights supporting Global Markets trading, risk management, and decisions.
  • Risk Quantitative Analytics builds models, analytics, and technology supporting financial-risk measurement, management, optimisation, compliance, and decisions.
  • Electronic Trading develops global platforms, algorithms, connectivity, automation, execution, resilience, and risk controls across asset classes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement quantitative models and strategies supporting decision-making, pricing, and risk management.
  • Design and maintain high-performance trading platforms and risk systems, integrating features that improve reliability and user experience.
  • Research data to identify market trends and drive innovation using advanced methodologies and technologies.
  • Collaborate with traders, sales, Risk, and Finance stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technology tools.
  • Work with Compliance, IT, and Strategy teams to resolve system issues and improve trading infrastructure.
  • Apply quantitative analysis, mathematical modelling, and technology to optimise trading processes, systems, infrastructure, and development practices.

Requirements

  • Completed, or be in the final year of, a postgraduate qualification at Master’s level or higher.
  • Relevant disciplines include Physics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Statistics, Stochastic Calculus, Computer Science, or another STEM subject.
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, C++, or Java.
  • Logical problem-solving abilities, with strong communication and collaboration skills.

Location and work authorisation

  • The role is based at Barclays’ London hub in Canary Wharf.
  • Visa sponsorship is available for eligible applicants meeting Home Office Skilled Worker visa criteria.
  • Applicants without sponsorship must hold legal UK full-time work rights throughout the programme.
